The dictionary meaning of resolution specifies it as a countable noun defining ‘a definite decision to do or not to do something’. While Barack Obama has mentioned his New Year resolutions around spending more time with family and staying fit, Taylor Swift talked about resolutions tied up to her career, relationships and self-improvement. Yo Yo Honey Singh, likewise, seemed firm with more disciplined life commitments.
Resolutions are generally predictable, carrying the essence of intended efforts, but remain non-binding because they are based on personal choices rather than obligations enforced by external factors. From spending quality time to learning new skills, make your bed to start with, eat healthier, practice gratitude, limit screen time, quit smoking/ drinking, read more or contribute to the community.
New Year resolutions are time honoured traditions and mostly people struggle to keep these resolutions due to lack of discipline, unrealistic expectations or fading motivation overtime. While resolutions symbolise hope, aspirations and positivity, their success depends on consistent efforts.
Why do we fail to keep these resolutions?
May be because we keep procrastinating! We are only accountable to ourselves, not to our self-consciousness. We try to take drastic measures and not go with the flow. Lack of proper strategic execution makes us forego our resolution soon.
Thus, we surely need to focus on setting specific, realistic and measurable goals. Break them into a smaller steps, track progress and celebrate small wins.
Resolution to ‘stay fit’ this year will start with a disciplined approach to giving time to yourself with a self-decided formula of maybe eating healthy and not ordering food from outside very frequently, 7-8 hours sleep as a must, 1 hour of physical regime, mindful eating, practicing meditation on routine basis, and also inculcating forgiveness and gratitude.
The point of having a resolution like ‘Staying fit’ is not just to lose weight, look smart and thin, but to be able to move, play, work and do any and everything which you intend to do in your age happily, without any physical and mental constraints.
Have resolutions, but be mindful. Count every inch loss as progress and celebrate it. Love yourself more to be dedicated to your goal!
‘A goal without a plan is a dream, a resolution with a plan is a future in the making’.
